Due to the incredible number of wasteful earmarks jammed into every spending bill that comes across the floor of the House, it is impossible for me to highlight each one for you. However, I try to bring those that are particularly egregious to your attention so you can see just exactly where your tax dollars are going. I recently came across this one and found it worth highlighting.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) apparently felt the transportation budget was big enough to support an earmark for the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. According to CBS News, the Skirball Cultural Center is managed by wealthy executives making six figures a year and grosses more than $885 million a year! Hardly a needy organization by any standard.

When asked about the $550,000 price tag for this project, Mr. Waxman indicated that he felt the cost was mere pennies. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to realize that American taxpayers depend on those “pennies” and each one was earned through hard work.

I can’t decide what’s more disturbing: The fact that the earmark is in the transportation bill (which has nothing to do with the Skirball Cultural Center) or the lack of judgment it took to not use those funds for something more critical - like say bridge and infrastructure repair?

Regardless, thanks to your tax dollars, Los Angeles’ newest attraction now brings in over $16,000 in ticket sales a week. Will the average American taxpayer benefit at all from that profit?  I doubt it.

Thanks John
Please continue to bring this kind of abuse of our tax dollars to light. The MSM will never do it. I don't understand why FOX doesn't do more of this type of reporting.

Fancy that
Someone on the right crabbing about "waste". I guess it means nothing to you that Bush is wasting 12 billion a month on a war that he's lost - a war that continues to kill our troops and Iraqi citizens daily. How about the money earmarked for veteran's healthcare? Did you know that even after promising to clean up Walter Reed and provide decent care for those brave soldiers wounded in Bush's war who were treated so poorly at the hospital, Bush has done NOTHING? NADA! Of course, there's also the victims from Hurricane Katrina who have still not seen the promised aid from our Bush Administration - but I hardly believe anyone here at TH gives a hoot about them.

Rather, the minions at TH bemoan Waxman, when under our noses Halliburton has been stealing us blind at our troops expense. Blackwater - another Bush crony group - is "winning the hearts and minds" the people of Iraq by killing with impunity innocents victims - AND OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE PAYING FOR THAT.

Your feigned outrage is really getting old.

Leftist Rant
Talisman bring the typical leftist rant to the table. Lets ignore the topic at hand and bash Bush and ignore the US Constitution that actually gives the Federal Government war-fighting powers.

Since they can not win any argument based on facts they go on emotional rants against the "mean and wicked" right.

Get a brain!

My District
This clown, I am ashamed to say, is my representative. The Republicans dont waste their time or money in this super rich, ultra-liberal haven (Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, West San Fernando Valley) where Hillary Clinton is looked on as a dangerous Right Winger. There's no issue to attack this guy on here-- if you went after him on illegal immigration people around here would be horrified at the thought of having to hire servants that spoke English (and hence could answer back), demanded health care coverage and Social Security. These upscale ex-hippies love everybody, of course, and want to save the planet just as long as the middle class makes the sacrifice. The Big Nostril suits these guys just fine.

It's easy to complain, hard to lead.
You and your party were 100% in power for six long years. Deficits went through the sky. Spending went mad. Earmarks shot through the roof, from both sides. You were silent. It is easy to complain about "the other side". It is much harder to look in the mirror.

The administration lost $8B in cash off of the back of trucks (that is 16,000 of Waxman's earmarks). $88B of contracts have non-compliant audits. How could you possibly vote for an Iraq supplemental that had 0.03% budgeted for audits and spending controls. If you ever advised a business this way, you would be personally responsible for the losses.

You are my representative. You spent over $1000 per cubic yard to haul off rubbish in New Orleans. You shipped ice through 15 states. You parked trailers and let them rot. You are my government representative. You knew about all of this. You had the power to speak up. You had the power to stop it. You did nothing.

So instead of complaining and bitching, do what your training had prepared you for. You are an accountant, so start accounting. Count the money that has been spent. Find the waste. Find the fraud. Don't protect your party or your friends. Protect only the truth. Follow the cash.

It is the crooks that are taking down our country. They are playing the people as fools. The business's that make millions but pay nothing. The lobbyist's who "invest" in congress so their employers can take billions from me. You are a part of a big scam. Don't say "look over there" and try to score political points. If you really believe in smaller government, start by finding out where money goes and find the crooks. And don't blame veterans for faking injuries, go for the big crooks. The no bid contracts. The lack of audits. The money is out there waiting for you to find it, but I suspect you would rather not look.

Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
...I've been to. It's an enjoyable and educational experience. That said, any federal money that goes to it is unconstitutional under the establishment clause of the First Amendment.

Well Said, Doug D
Kudos to Doug D for an eloquent statement of what congresspeople should be doing to assure accountability.

I find it interesting that of all the congresspeople Mr. Campbell could have chosen to make his case about wasteful earmarks, he picks Henry Waxman. Could that have more to do with Waxman's tenacity in uncovering Bush administration shenanigans than the merits of an expenditure for a cultural center?

Mr.Waxman`s spending Pennies
Thanks for shedding light on Mr. Waxman not minding spending millions of taxpayers hard earned money. Mr. Waxman, represents rich liberal Los Angeles Socialist progressive elitists. He likes big government with total control of everyday lives of every American.

Doug D
Doug,

What you ask is too much for our electeds to understand. It is much easier for John and his party to criticize the other party than actually lead.

Having a GOP lecture us on fiscal responsibility when they are the biggest spendthrifts in the history of our nation is like a child killing his parents and then asking for mercy because he's an orphan.

Lead John. Don't criticize. The GOP needs to clean its own house before it starts throwing stones at someone else.

WASTE and CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS
I don't know what is worse, wasteful spending or
lawmakers and campaign contributions!! It seems
all lawmakers have their pet projects they want
to fund but they also need to keep their contributors happy!! I suspect that more money
is spent to please their contributors, after all
that's why they got the contributions in the first place!! It's an incestuous relationship
and that's why things taxpayers want never get
done!!

You must all realize that even though we vote these people into office, they don't represent us
once they get there!!

Keep terms short and get new people in more often. Take back control of our country before
it's too late!!

It's a sad state of affairs!!
