Apart from that however, perhaps the swine manure expenditure could be coupled with the cricket control spending to create less methane coming out of a Congress and Administration that seem to ‘chirp’ a lot about their earmark reform ... by jimminy.

When Obama vowed to 'change the fundamentals' of this country, he was saying 'whitey' in middle class america is about to get handed his head with redistribution.
Obama is not stupid but he does believe in the ground game of 'equalizing' the playing field. When middle class whites are marginalized, they will lose any financial advantage to pass on to their children making it easier for ALL americans to 'compete' from the same 'disadvantage'. Obama thinks that he is going to "rebuild" American society he has said this over and over again. When actually the liberals in Congress are. He is not a leader just the most popular person in the world. There is a big diffrence, a leader directs the nation out of the crisis with responsible and nessecary policies. A popular person only wants to stay popular. Therefore he is letting Congress "rebuild" the US into what they have wanted since the 60's. There is a disconnect here. The liberals see the excessive spending in these areas as nessecary. For example the carbon cap is a tax that libs deem essential to protecting the environment. Therefore it is not "expanding" the budget, we SHOULD have been doning it all along in their opinion. I believe him when he says there are no earmarks in it they actually believe that these programs are going to work. The truth is that he is out classed. He simply does not know what to do and his party is taking advantage of him. All the liberals ever needed was someone that was popular enough to distract the nation while they rammed a socialist agenda through. The only hope we have as conservatives is that he will wake up one day and realize that he is the President and take up his traditional role reguardless of his party. |

Back in my camping days just about every time we drove into a National Forest or National Park or even over a bridge over a culvert, we saw a marker giving the date of construction, around 1935, to show that the project was built by the WPA, FDR's program to put people to work during the Depression. It occurs to me that if the present Conservative movement had been active then, or as active as it is now, they would have complained that these projects were "pork". For the last few evenings my TV has shown people going back to work on infrastructure projects---ALREADY---as a result of Obama's Stimulus Bill. If a works program is set up to employ people using federal money to pay them, as a way of stimulating the economy, and this is done with projects creating or improving infrastructure---that's only "pork" to people who want to make Obama look bad because the only change they want is more tax cuts for business (the Republican solution). The infrastructure has to be in some physical place, namely a state, so they call it "pork" for that state to smear it. Last night TV showed construction beginning on a bridge---but Conservatives called this "a bridge to nowhere". Ask the men who are employed and who can now use their wages to take care of their children whether they are against such "pork". Ask the grocery store where those men will spend their pay if they are against such "pork". |

You are correct that the WPA built many worthy structures during the depression. What you might not know is that many of these were designed by Army engineers. The CCC was run in large part by Army people too.
The WPA was, from what I have heard and read, was pretty well managed and pretty well planned. It did have a mite of corruption as democrats were hired first -- at least in WVA. The Foxfire series of books have many first handed accounts of folks who worked on the WPA.
The problem as I see it is that there is nobody in WASHDC with enough mnagement ability/common sense to come up with something like the WPA. I am speaking of both parties! |

Lilly, dear, if you can't see the difference between a bridge and a plan to control crickets in Utah, you should stop reading the columns on this site and seek remedial education. One can argue that a bridge is a worthwhile project that will support future commerce. It's very hard to make such an argument for cricket removal efforts.
But why do we waste our time with these semantics arguments? Barack Obama lied when he said he would target pork spending. He lied when he said there was no pork in the stimulus bill. There was a time, not so long ago, when liberals claimed to be deeply offended by a president who lied to them. Now liberals seem to think that lying nonstop just goes with the office. Don't expect anyone to take any of you seriously, and don't expect anyone to listen when the next conservative Congress starts tearing down every dumb-a$$ project you support. You have no credibility any more. |

I'm not talking about study grants. The Federal government PAYS farmers to grow certain crops, and also PAYS them NOT to grow certain crops. My point was that farmers DO NOT study the market to decide what crops to grow, they just do what the government tells them to do. Or pays them to do, which amounts to the same thing.
It is a totally socialist system. American agriculture is owned and controlled by the Federal government. And it's been this way since the New Deal. But you never hear conservatives complain about it.
It's a never ending source of amusement to hear conservatives railing at the New Deal, when it was FDR's genius to spend most of the money in poor, conservative states. What do you think Tennessee would look like today without the TVA and with laissez-faire Republicans in power? What do you think Arizona - hotbed of right-wing conservatives - would be without Federal highway, water, and power programs? A couple hundred ranchers and a couple thousand sheep, that's what.
For decades now, the red states have received MORE Federal money than they pay in Federal taxes. And these are the states where people complain about the government!
Lucky for you, us blue state citizens just laugh at you and let you take our money. |
