Today, Jeff Flake and I offered an amendment to the FY2009 Military Construction/Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill.  Our amendment would prohibit funding for the 103 congressionally requested earmarks found in the bill.  This amendment would also reduce the overall cost of the bill by the more than half a billion taxpayer dollars.

This is likely to be the only appropriations bill that we will see before the election, and the only chance Members will have to publicly state their position on earmarks. In what should be a pretty straightforward vote, at least for Republicans, is causing considerable consternation for both sides of the aisle.  It is being considered in the Report cards of numerous groups.

The Amendment failed by a vote of 350-63, to see how Members voted, click here.

Clearly Members of Congress do not yet understand what the vast majority of Americans know--earmarks must be ended or reformed. However, we did garner more votes than a similar amendment received last year. It can take awhile for Congress to get a message.

Keep sending them one.

Thanks
Thank goodness for men like Rep. Flake, & Campbell. In the past I've donated to the RNCC but I refuse to do so again until spending and earmarks are reigned in. Until the majority of Republican Representatives support spending reforms and earmark elimination I will not donate to the RNCC. I would be happy to donate to individual representatives.

Keep It UP!
Hey let's keep the fire in what we are doing. I am quite certain low approval ratings in congress are simple. The people think congress is doing NOTHING! We need to keep the fire going and get excited about making the many changes that need to be made now.

And YES let's cut government spending. Especially as EARMARKS!

Glad to hear it!
I'm so glad to hear that someone in Congress is trying to get rid of earmarks! I too used to give to the Republican party, but now when I get the many requests for money in the mail, I take my Sharpie, and write a big "0" in the amount line. Then I put, among other things, NO MORE EARMARKS!!!! I will also give to individuals, but not a penny will go to the RNCC.

Applause, but ...
.. it should be obvious to Rep. Campbell and the very few others like him that trying to get runaway pork spending under control with this Congress could best be compared to "pissing into the wind."

Politics and power being what they are ... it just "ain't gonna happen."

Nice try, though, Mr. Campbell. Keep fighting the good (though unwinable) fight. You at least bring some attention to this merry band of bandits.

Keep up the good fight.
The 63 are on the right and the correct side of this fight. I hope Arizona keeps Rep. Flake in the House for a good long time. We need more like him, and it is good to see those who are standing by him, though disappointing to see such a large majority need to be weened of their pork milk... .
