According to the Oregonian, Rep. David Wu (D-OR) directed more than $ 2 million dollars in T-shirt contracts to InSport International, a clothing manufacturer in Mr. Wu’s district.  Unfortunately, these shirts are prone to melting and burning in high heat, thus rendering them dangerous and useless to soldiers in combat.

According to Captain Lynn Welling, the head surgeon of the 1st Marine Logistic Group, the polyester in these “melting shirts” adheres to the skin in intense heat, essentially creating a second skin which leads to horrific disfiguring burns.

Rep. Wu earmarked the contract into the 2006 Defense Appropriations Bill. Due to the design flaw, the Marines shortly thereafter banned the use of polyester shirts for use in combat, or anywhere outside the protected “Green Zone” bases.  However, because of Mr. Wu’s earmark the Marines were forced to buy 87,000 of the banned shirts.

While the idea of a more comfortable shirt for our troops is commendable, the flaws of the shirts’ design were left uninvestigated.  This is the purpose for process of competitively bidding contracts… to get the best product possible.

By the way, shortly after his earmarks passed in the Defense Appropriations Bill, Rep. Wu received nearly $15,000 in campaign contributions from InSport executives.

Polyester?
What genius decided that polyester is GOOD in a desert/high heat/cold night climate, anyway? Probably not even flame retardant, either. Amazing. Do I hear a little down home payola?

Wu is from my neck of the woods
and has a real credibility problem. But no matter how much he messes up he just keeps getting re-elected. Sometimes living here gets real discouraging!

Does this really surprise anyone?
Earmarks and bribery have become the #1 currency in dc. It's bad on both sides of thei aisle, but it seems the most egregious cases are coming from the left side. What else can you expect with people like Abscam Murtha, william "Cold Cash" Jefferson, and an Impeached federal Judge serving as oour "Representatives"?

The first liberal that brings up larry craig as a counterpoint is gonna get slapped around. :op

Why would anybody want polyester shirts?
Considering T shirts are worn next to the skin, why would anybody want polyester in them? Didn't they get to spec them to be 100% cotton or other comfortable fabric? Polyester is too hot to be used in anything but freezing weather outer wear clothing. Wu needs to insist the shirts are made of comfortable fabrics, NOT polyester!

Rep Wu's real district
Given the knee-jerk hatred of the US military by the Dems, perhaps Mr. Wu should be listed as: "Rep. David Wu, (D-People's Republic of China)" ?

Keep It Up John!
You're the best Congress-person on the Hill and you're not even from my district. The "Valley Girl", Jane Harmon, is my rep. (such as she is).

unbelievable
how idiotic and obtuse the posters in this thread are. Not a peep over the years when the GOP controlled this country about our men and women at war having no body armor, no bullets, poor training for the job at hand, poor care when they return, shortages of bullets and up-armored Humvees, and on and on and on.

You people don't give a rat's sass about our troops, all you care about is scoring political points at the cost of our soldiers' lives.

Leave my country, move to Iran or China or NK, where the ideology better fits you fools.
