There is no doubt that headway has been made in the battle to reform earmarks, at least among House Republicans that is.

Last week, during debate on the Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) appropriations bill, 10 amendments were debated on the floor by myself, Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX). These amendments would strike various earmarks present in the bill.

This alone is altogether not particularly newsworthy, but on average, just under 65% of the Republican conference voted in favor of striking the earmarks in all 10 amendments. I remember in 2006, when it was almost taboo to vote ‘yes’ on measures like these, and there were only a handful of us fighting to reform the process, limit the wasteful spending, and staunch the tide of earmark corruption. Clearly, the message has gotten through to my colleagues.

Of course, there is still much work to be done on this front, but with the majority of the Republican caucus backing reform, perhaps now is the time to address sweeping and substantive earmark reform.

Georgann
Earmarks - judicial appointments - amendments - it would be funny to hear those fools in Congress making their outraged accusations if it weren't so sad.

Actually, "earmark" is one of the most misunderstood terms in the country today. You never heard it before a few years ago, and I'm sure most of the people posting here couldn't explain what an "earmark" actually is and why it's a bad thing.

Have a nice trip, Georgann:

While you are away, take some time to read and comprehend what is posted and then stay on topic.

Anytime you have to hide what you are doing to get funding on your pet project it is wrong, washington won't learn till me get piissed off and throw them out for this practice.

Earmark
A mark of identification made on the ear of an animal to show ownership. Not a bad thing really.

The most telling thing about these politicians and earmarks is the amount that were added to the stimulus bill. At a time when the country was going down the tubes these clowns could not control themselves. They continued with business as usual. Shows just out of touch they are with reality.

Where were you last Congress...
you know when the Dems actually initiated earmark reform? I know it didn't go far enough but it could have with full support of the House.

So Right Diane
everytime I correspond with my senators and congress people,or see them I ask that we stop the spending crap, we need to stay on them, hold their feet to the fire.

We all must continue to do as you are by letting our politicians know that we are not happy with business as usual. Only if they feel threatened with not being elected again will they get the idea that they must change their ways. Us just blogging is not the answer. Taking it directly to them will perhaps give them a message.

Reform
Was Murtha informed about it? I hear they are paving more runway for his airport to nowhere.

one of the advantages of living here, small population we get more of a chance to know our politicians, but it is still important to stay connected to our representatives and senators.

Murtha
Niow that you have brought it up Big Sky, Murtha is probably one of the biggest offenders of business as usual. I am sure there are valuable infrastructure problems in PA that could use this federal money. Instead this money is being spent on a project that clearly only benefits very few, Murtha being the biggest benefactor.

Although I come from a more populated area it is important that those like me make the effort to do the same. It is only by taking an interest can we take back our country from these career politicians who have forgotten who they work for.

Diane
So who is your congressman/woman? Does any federal money ever get spent in your district?

Off Topic
Just seen on the news that L.A. has no money to prosecute rapist but somehow found over 7 million dollars to build an enclosure for monkeys that now sits uninhabited.

What the heck is going on in CA.

Earmarks are the least of the concerns
But leave it to the ineffectual Rethugs to keep harping away. Didn't Bachmann whine about earmarks, at least until someone pointed out her own feeding at the trough? Yeah, lots and lots of hypocrisy here, and they've all got their "but that was different!" fake argument.

And you've GOT to love the sudden turnabout of the so-called, newly minted "fiscal conservatives" - these are the same clowns who rubberstamped the Bush spending spree leading up to the WORST economic drubbing since the Great Depression.

Your corrupt Rethugs is what is happening out there. Blame them. Oops - I forgot. Yours is the Party of Unaccountability - the own up to nothing, and project everything onto others. Hah - no wonder their poll numbers have tanked.
Dread writes: Tuesday, June, 23, 2009 12:16 PM
Of course...
None of the money is going to not be spent even if it isn't earmarked, so this is really political show theater that lets our Congressmen play at fiscal responsibility.

It'll just get distributed according to the whims of a bureaucrat rather than the whims of a congressman.
Kaboom writes: Tuesday, June, 23, 2009 12:20 PM
We're cranking out earmarks like crazy!
We LOVE them!
And you can't do anything about it!

Yeah, you know how we now know who sponsored the earmarks that end up in the bill so that we, the public, can see them. It took Dem control of Congress to pass that. The GOP couldn't be bothered with it when it was in charge.
