Guest Blog by Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.)

Just a few hours ago, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 246-183 to pass the so-called “economic stimulus” package proposed by President Obama and written by congressional Senator Jim DeMintDemocrats. Every single House Republican opposed the bill. (Roll Call)

This evening members of the Senate will meet to cast their votes as well. Sadly, three Republicans will likely join Democrats to ensure the bill is passed.

The massive spending bill, filled to the brim with a liberal wish list of pork projects, spends a minimum of $789 billion and possibly as much as $3.27 trillion (Heritage Foundation).

As my friend, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, and I wrote today in the Washington Examiner (DC Examiner):

"Each and every one of the $800 billion in  taxpayer dollars that Mr. Obama wants to inject into the economy has to come from somewhere, and in this case, we are laying the bill at the feet of those  very children and grandchildren whose future the President says he’s committed  to protecting. And we share the belief that mortgaging the economic future of  successive generations of Americans in order to buy ourselves some short-term  job relief is not only bad policy, it’s an abdication of our  responsibility.  A moral argument is certainly in play here—Obama just  happens to be on the wrong side of it."

The final version of the bill was made available to the public (and to us Republicans in Congress) yesterday at 11 p.m., which gives us less than 24 hours to read 1,071 pages. I can guarantee you that none of my congressional colleagues will have read this bill in its entirety before they vote on it today. It will likely be years before we learn the true consequences of today's irresponsible action.

It is disappointing to see the same old games being played in Washington after being promised that things were finally going to change. However, there is reason to be hopeful. For weeks my office and others on Capitol Hill have been flooded with calls and letters from constituents voicing angry opposition to the stimulus package that will do little, if anything, to stimulate the economy. (McClatchy) It’s heartening to hear from so many of my fellow Americans who are informed and involved and anxious to preserve their freedom.

So while liberals rushed through a temporary victory for Big Government today, I am confident Americans will win the final battle for freedom in the days to come -- as long as they are vigilant in their quest and speak out to protect their liberties.

Elected as South Carolina’s 55th senator in 2004, Senator DeMint quickly established himself as one of the most effective conservative leaders in Washington, seeking to enact innovative solutions to improve America for future generations. He has been a tireless advocate for smaller government, individual liberty, a strong national defense and traditional values.

Stimulus disaster
It is very frustrating as an American to see my elected officials making a decision as large as this WITHOUT EVEN READING IT! As a resident of Pennsylvania, I am extremely disappointed in Arlen Specter's decision to sign onto this bill. If Sen. Specter wants change he can believe in, he will get it in 2010, when he WILL be voted out of office.

On the grand scale, how can any elected official, regardless of party, vote on a piece of legislation that THEY HAVEN'T EVEN READ? Especially something that will fundamentally change the way this country operates. Any member of Congress who signs off on this legislation WITHOUT READING IT, should be removed from office for not properly representing their constituents.

Citizens and Citizen Legislators ...
To the line by line barricades!

Senator, the duty now will be to delay as much of the spending as is possible. The off year elections in two years will scald and cauterize the House Democrats for this covert and crypto stimulus bill passage.

Every expenditure, new building, old project that attempts to go into gear must be analyzed, examined, railed against and if need be litigated against.

Where the allotment of funds is of questionable value, use the EPA or other regulatory authority to delay the spending until the seating of a new and likely cleansed Congress.

The thief in the night technique used by Speaker Pelosi betrays her sub-text of corruption and contempt for her colleagues, fellow citizens and country. How you act, is who you are ...

Like Jabba the Hut in the Star Wars Bar, Ms. Pelosi and this administration appear to prefer the gourmand to the gourmet and the grotesque to the gracious.

Speak Out?
..."So while liberals rushed through a temporary victory for Big Government today, I am confident Americans will win the final battle for freedom in the days to come -- as long as they are vigilant in their quest and speak out to protect their liberties."

Senator DeMint, I love you..I really do, But I must respectfully ask ...what do you think we have been doing?

We HAVE been speaking out, only to be ignored. Americans have been calling, faxing and emailing their Representatives. But the problem is they are NOT LISTENING! If the politicians had listened to their constituents we would not be in this mess to begin with.

This is why "We the people" ARE SOOO ANGRY!!!
Most politicians are not doing what they were elected to do. Most politicians are actively trying to destroy America.

Senator DeMint, we are AFRAID AND ANGRY! This is a very bad and dangerous situation. We are afraid we are losing our country, and we are angry that the majority of politicians are ignoring us.

Very well said Sue. I agree with you completely especially the part that says: "....we are AFRAID AND ANGRY! This is a very bad and dangerous situation. We are afraid we are losing our country, and we are angry that the majority of politicians are ignoring us."

I cannot believe that because of 3 Republicans, the GOP is not 100 percent in agreement. These 3 will go down in the history book in a very negative way.

Time to Get Angry
"Sadly, three Republicans will likely join Democrats to ensure the bill is passed."

I am a very civil person. I strongly believe that we should treat all people with respect. I also believe that there is a time and place to make a stand. I am not going to say I speak for everyone, but I am sick and tired of Republicans being civil to dems, like Schumer, Pelosi & Reid, who have no respect for the public or prinicples that this government was founded upon. If you want to be re-elected, its time to be angry with a purpose. Confront those who are stealing our Liberty, and our children's future.
Instead of "sadly", maybe you could say that they betrayed the country, the founding principles, the men and women who have died in service of this country, and future generations that have not been born. It is time to Fight.
If you don't have the stomach for it, then let someone have the job who will. This is not directed to one man, but all men and women who believe in the principles that this country was founded upon.

This is a big loss for partisan politics
But otherwise, how is bill even remotely being cast as a loss of "freedom"?

The GOP is dangerously close to being seen as flat out ridiculous and untrustworthy, which may not be such a tragedy in the end. When it comes to reining in our country's runaway economy and foreign policy, we need leadership to prevail, not ideologically motivated stonewalling.

Raeli--read the Bill
I have read the Bill enough to know that the dems are on the way to socialize medicine and ration our care by bureaucrats in DC. They are incrementally re-creating the welfare state.
Also, the discretionary budget is shrinking so much, that we will not need representation anymore because all of our budget will be going to debt service and welfare programs.

I suggest you read the writings of our Founding Fathers, the Constitution and then the Friday the 13th Bill. Then we can discuss this intelligently.

Economy Wrecking Bill
Apparently, Congressional leaders were only feigning their disapproval of those banking excecutives who have used other people's money for frivolous extras since their financial instiutions received their overly generous share of TARP. If only our Congressional leaders possessed a genuine disapproval of their own misuse of other people's money, this bill would never have seen the "light of day" . . . oh wait, it didn't see the "light of day".

Thank you, Mr. DeMint and your Republican colleagues who have stood firmly against this wreckless bill.

Offering an alternative bill that would have created twice the jobs at half the cost is NOT obstructing. It's called bipartisanship, offering solutions, trying to stimulate the ecnonomy, helping the American people....take your pick.

The obstruction to ALL of this came from the Democrats. They were the ones who held conference in secret. They are the ones obstructing the American people from even finding out what was in the bill before it was voted on by not posting as they promised to. let's face the idiots voting on it don't even know whats in it so don't try to kid me it's "transparent".

Explain to all of us EXACTLY what the Republicans have obstructed. You keep spouting this talking point (and yes we know why...are you paid by the post?) over and over and over again on every thread but so far I have not seen anything that has been obstructed.

So, I ask again..WHAT HAVE THE REPUBLICANS OBSTRUCTED?

Here's some definitions just in case you don't understand the word....
1 : to block or close up by an obstacle
2 : to hinder from passage, action, or operation : impede
3 : to cut off from sight

Think long and hard about #2 & #3.

The Democratic Uniparty
When you are getting mentally ill rhetoric from the left, what do you expect:

“The GOP is borderline autistic in its understanding of the necessary to-and-fro of democratic government. Or rather: its ideological nature prevents it from engaging in the actual tasks of pragmatic government.”

Andrew “The Conservative Soul” Sullivan

Sullivan Says: Respect Mah Authoritah! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_THfFmM57Z8

Sullivan has turned so hypocritical and extreme in his rhetoric, he is almost entertaining. What will the nut case say next?

This stimulus plan was poorly thought out, rushed through, and jammed down Republican throats. Of course the GOP balked. Had Team Obama even tried to reach out (or rather rein in Pelosi and Reid) this bill would have had significant GOP support.

Becareful what you wish for
In 1897, troops from the greatest empire the world had ever seen marched down London’s mall for Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. Seventy years later, Britain had government health care, a government-owned car industry, and massive government housing, having become a shriveled high-unemployment socialist basket case living off the dwindling cultural capital of its glorious past. In 1945, America emerged from the Second World War as the preeminent power on earth. Seventy years later . . .

Let’s not go there.

Stagflation?
Not So Happy Days reported in the NYT Op-ed:

CONGRESS has made a terrible mistake. Amid a rhetorical debate centered on words like “crisis,” “emergency” and “catastrophe,” it acted too fast. While arguments were made about the stimulus bill’s specific components — taxpayer money for condoms, new green cars and golf carts for federal bureaucrats, another round of rebate checks — its more dangerous consequences were overlooked. And now the package threatens a return to the kind of stagflation last seen in the 1970s.

Did the GOP just vote against tax cuts?
The back story on the Recovery and Reinvestment Act is that the GOP just voted as a partisan bloc against one of the biggest tax cuts in our history.

The compromise stimulus plan includes $282 billion in tax cuts over two years.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Bush's first two years of tax cuts amounted to $174 billion. A second batch in 2004 and 2005 cost $231. And those were thought to be bigger than the tax cuts offered by Reagan, Kennedy or others.

It will be interesting hearing how the GOP justifies their votes against this in 2010 and 2012.

WHAT DEMS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW HR219
DON'T RAISE TAXES DON'T RAISE RATES--VOTE FOR HR 219 INSTEAD ---but guess why PUBLIC hasn't heard about it??

Because DEMS don't want anyone to know that this bill will for DECADES to come SECURE SOCIAL SECURITY for the PUBLIC how?

1. Creates enough SURPLUS to pay all SOC SEC benefits for decades to come

2.Keeps politicians from cutting PRESENTSOC SEC benefits

3. keeps politicians from raising taxes. The lobby groups put out the info yesterday and that DEMS don't want anyone to know because then politicians would have to stop using the SOC SEC for pork projects. introduced to Congress by RON PAUL OF TEXAS.

If you want to put a stop to this worst spending you can write your congressman, Christopher Kit Bond and Claire McCaskill at the US Senate, Washington D.C. 20510 or your US Congressman Respresenting the 8th District, Jo Ann Emerson, Washington D.C., 20510.

Tell them your want to see the Social Security Preservation Act HR 219 which would require 100% of the trust fund money saved be passed. It is clear politicians will not pass the Social Security preservation Act HR 219 unless a tidal wave of support for the American public forces them too.

LOCKBOX LAW SAVES MEDICARE
MEDICARE CAN BE SAVED--HERE'S WHY YOU HAVEN'T HEARD ABOUT IT

HERE is LOCKBOX LAW and the fix our SENIOR COLA law which will ensure that our MEDICARE gets saved without loss of services and without raising of premiums. But the PUBLIC must be active to the lobby for it to pass. This keeps POLITICIANS from "raiding" the TRUST. This puts Congress on notice that PUBLIC WILL NOT tolerate the abuse of SOC SEC. They are also working to protect medicare. at site-Campaign to Save Social Security and Medicare site project of National Assoc for Uniformed Services. You DON'T have to be a SENIOR to help.

The DEMS would rather claim that taxes need to be raised, and that services need to be cut, and their Socialist rhetoric that American's are so "selfish" for not wanting to pay higher taxes, rather than keep from using the funds for pet pork projects and to pay off those whom helped them get elected

STIMULUS DENIES HEALTHCARE TO KIDS/ADULT
stimulus is a STEALTH bill
which contains an 800 page pro-Socialist written section where it
says
that the PUBLICS pratitioners are to give treatment ONLY that WHICH
is
COST EFFECTIVE to GOVERNMENT and that GOV says is appropriate NOT
what is BENEFITIAL to make PUBLIC healthy and NOT what will keep the
PUBLIC alive and NOT what will protect the PUBLIC.

iT also states that any illness lets say osteoporosis for example, if
you are x percent chances of survival---they will let you DIE. Same
thing with any illness allergies, asthma, add adhd and osteoporosis children as well.

Also, the Bill states that the PUBLIC must meet GOVERNMENT
requirements to receive care and it leaves it up to GOVERNMENT to
decide what those REQUIREMENTS ARE. (politically religious or otherwise) for GOV to make up as they go along.

In it's present state it alloows GOV to DICTATE to PUBLIC Political, religious, and any stipulations it wants--the same as Russia and other countries.

If coupled with mislabeled "fairness doctrine" it will give a BLANK check to GOV to deny healthcare to NON-MUSLIMS.

And, for whaaat??? So that American's can work hard to GIVE their money to GOV to satify the GOV want for pork at the expense of you and your childs health, safety.

Why not link us to the parts of the bill that you are paraphrasing?

There has been a lot of misconception floating around about what the bill, one of which is a 'secret provision' creating a new government bureaucracy created to overrule your doctor's decisions about your health. This particular misrepresentation was put forward by Betsy McCoy in a commentary in Bloomberg News this week, repeated in red on the Drudge Report, making an appearance on the Rush Limbaugh show all week long before going on to CNN and FoxNews. Not one of these news outlets investigated Ms. McCoy's allegations or her motivation for misrepresenting the bill's actually wording.

Betsy cites p.442 of the bill as the item claiming the government will dictate "at bedside.....decisions at time and place of care". In fact, it says "Provides appropriate information to help guide medical decisions at the time and place of care". Guiding and dictating are two different things altogether.

The "government bureaucracy" that McCoy speaks of is actually an existing position, assigned by President Bush in 2004. The National Coordinator of health information is David Braler, a Bush admin apointee.

For clarity sake, and something none of the news outlets explored before taking her at her word, Betsy McCoy is an adjunct fellow at the Hudson Institute, a think tank funded by drug companies. Does she have skin in the game when it comes to undermining the Recovery and Reinvestment Act? It would seem so.

"it will give a BLANK check to GOV to deny healthcare to NON-MUSLIMS."

Putting aside the lashings of utter fantasy contained in your series of semi-coherent posts, I'm curious what good a blank check would be when denying health care. "Blank check" means "as much money as they want;" it doesn't cost anything to DENY service. So why would a blank check be useful?

And why NON-MUSLIMS? It doesn't cost anything more to deny health care to Muslims also. Does this have anything to do with the fact that Obama was born in Kenya to a family of proud Muslim socialist suicide bombers?
Grateful Dad writes: Monday, February, 16, 2009 5:00 PM
WHAT'S THE RUSH??
Obama would be toast if he had to explain the bill to citizens and lawmakers.

The reason it was pushed through so quickly was to spare Obama and the Democrats of the charade of trying to defend this stimulus idiocy.

Claim crisis and justify the railroading of this bill.

Liberals will slurp it up because they will do what Obama says.

Now the Democrats get to choose the winners and losers in our economy.

Buy your gold and divest in America, it's going down.
