Just in case you thought the conservatives on Capitol Hill were the only ones up in arms over the pork filled appropriations bill meant to fund the war, in an editorial this morning, the Washington Post criticized the bill because of the reckless withdraw provisions and the $20 billion in unrelated spending thrown in the bill.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/22/AR2007032201883.html

The legislation pays more heed to a handful of peanut farmers than to the 24 million Iraqis who are living through a maelstrom initiated by the United States, the outcome of which could shape the future of the Middle East for decades.

As it is, House Democrats are pressing a bill that has the endorsement of MoveOn.org but excludes the judgment of the U.S. commanders who would have to execute the retreat the bill mandates. It would heap money on unneedy dairy farmers while provoking a constitutional fight with the White House that could block the funding to equip troops in the field. Democrats who want to force a withdrawal should vote against war appropriations. They should not seek to use pork to buy a majority for an unconditional retreat that the majority does not support.

In addition, to the the article in the Washington Post, I was particularly struck by a report released by the RSC. Among other things, it found that if you took the $219 million allotted in the bill for spinach, peanut storage, and shrimp fishing, and directed it to the troops, it would be the equivalent of providing every soldier in Iraq with an additional $1,425.

Mr. Campbell
Spending?

The record of the Republicans over the last six years when it comes to spending isn't exactly exemplary.

Beyond that this is simple politics of trading one item for another.

In order to get various Democrats to sign on to supporting the bill Pelosi is willing to give them certain things. They get what they want, she gets what she wants.

This has been going on for the longest time with politicians over various issues.

Don't act as if this is something new and outrageous. It isn't

This is the kind of thing Pelosi said would be done away with during the 1st 100 hours of he reign, I mean leadership.

Thus far her accomplishments:

4 Resolutions to cut and run
1 huge pork laden, ear mark rich appropriations bill
and some 60 investigations into WH activites, both past and present.

Not much to hang your hat on- not exactly the thing her fellow Dems ran on in 2006.

dogjudge,
You said: "Don't act as if this is something new and outrageous. It isn't"

Are you kidding me? You think this is some kind of a domestic SPENDING bill? You think THAT's what this issue is about?

This is the first time the US has actually announced a future surrender date in an ongoing shooting war. It's beyond words.

Many of these Democrats ran as hawks. Oh, sorry. That was only to get elected -- sort of like all their original votes to authorize the war in the first place.

Don't think that people who have spent their entire lives in Washington politics, much of it at the national level don't know the military implications of what they are doing here. The end game is to surrender and the purpose of forcing an exiting this way is to hobble the war effort in the meantime so that Democrats can create a military failure on the way out -- all the better to justify leaving.

We'll see what the voters think about all this.

Their voters don't think, that is how they were elected to office in the first place. They "feel", as in they are war weary. But then, so was my family during WWII, but we fought and won. They "feel" the war isn't going well. And along comes these Dems promising to make all things right. But, alas, what matters what a liar promises, what weight does his word have? You know he will break it. Everyone with half a lick of sense should have known that all the good little Dems would be good little Dems once in office.
It's like the fable about the snake being given a ride across the river. He promises not to bite his carrier and foolishly he is allowed on the beast's back. Half way across, he bites his carrier and as they sink, the beast decries, "Why did you bite me, now we will both perish!" To which the snake replied, "I could not help it, it is my nature". So to, this is the nature of these people. And like the beast and the snake in the fable, because of them and our collective foolishness in trusting them, we shall both perish.

NO SHAME

Most of those people on the Hill have no shame whatsoever. If I had voted for that bill, I would hide my head in shame. But those folks won't. No, no, no, no. They're actually proud of themselves. Have mercy!

Doubtlessly, they feel they've done their duty to their states and probably to their big contributors.

If I ate salmon, I would quit. If I ate peanuts, I would quit. I'll look up all the other lardy projects with which they stuffed the bill, and I will avoid those products like the very plague.

Best of all, as soon as I find out how my representative voted, I will tell him exactly what I've said here. In addition, I will tell him that he'd better be hanging on to that job for dear life, because if I have anything to do with it, it will be the last government job he has for which I'm required to vote.

The Dems have become the Dims. Or just more so.

WW2 and Vietnam era equipment ?? As a 17 year veteran( 11-b) getting ready for my third trip I am sick and tired of people who have zero knowledge of what they speak !!And just spout nonsence that they have heard. We have the best equiped military in the world !! Our vehicles and support are the envy of the rest of the coalition ! Lest you forget that during the 90s the armed forces was gutted but we were deployed all over the world at un precented rate.. I know I was at most of those places...Sitting in Baghdad listening to some people spouting self serving mantras like " We support the troops but not the war" Makes us want to puke ! We would have more respect for you people if you grab your sack and and start spitting !! We dont want your support ! Go get a Latte !!

The message?
The statement that democrats make with this move is: we can be bought.
As long as we have money to dole out, we're happy. And we need alot.

Steve O - Surrender to Who
So when we leave, who are we surrendering to?

We've won, in case you haven't figured that out yet.

Saddam's gone. The WMDs are gone. Since we can't find Osama Bin Laden, he's obviously not there. al Queda? How many do you think are in Iraq. Besides, let the Iraqis fight them. It's there country.

We accomplished what President Bush wanted to accomplish.

Of course, unless you know something the rest of us don't know.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of Americans do not spew their opinion all over the media or to anyone who will not tell them to shut the #@$^$^ up. Know this. WHEN we suffer another terror attack, you will hear from 'the vast majority' of America and the 'mandate' they give their reps in Congress (all the libs will be tarred and feathered and dropped out of a B2 onto Iran). Our military is supported by PLENTY of AMERICANS. We are 'too busy' supporting our families while the rich, elite, libs give our money to terrorists' lawyers and Jimmy (the Father of the Islamists) Carter's buddies. Pardon me while I puke.

What drugs are you taking?

I retired from the Army in 1991. There wass no WWII or Vietnam era equipment in the army at that time.

The vehicles that were supposed to be armored were. There has been an additional 70,000 HMMWV's uparmored since the start of hostilities.

You need to follow Littlejoe61's advice and let the grownups debate the dastardly democrat debacle.
