According to a recently released report by Taxpayer’s for Common Sense (TCS), House members will receive $290 million more in earmarks this year, than in last.   This increase is also accompanied by an increase in approved projects, which will swell by about 200 this year.

These spending projects are included in the appropriations bills approved by the House, and so far we have only passed one of these spending bills. Current House leadership is hoping that a Democratic President will be friendlier to member earmarks, so it is unlikely we will pass or even consider anymore appropriations bills until after the first of the year.

Overall, $5.12 billion accounts for all the earmarks in the spending bills we have seen thus far.  That takes into account these bills before conference reports, however conference reports are notorious for being stuffed with pork before being sent off to the President.

Earmarks are the gateway drug to overspending, they must be reformed to help temper Congress’ addiction.

Psycho Kim, get some therapy.
Did you read John's post or did you just skim for red meat? Everyone, both sides, should be pissed at the out of control spending. I hope we get rid of these members of Congress on both sides that have no control.

You: What's the current GOP mantra? blame the Dems...

Me: Right back at ya, phycho.

Every bit helps...
But cutting 5 billion from the budget still leaves you about 450 billion in the red this year alone, Congressman, with a grand total of 10 trillion outstanding and future liabilities of 20-30 trillion.

I urge you to look harder to find cuts.

Pelosi's "most ethical Congress ever"..
Wasn't the runaway spending of the GOP Congress one of the reasons why the dems were handed the reins in 2006.. The Madam certainly is doing a bang up job of it, isn't she? Not that I blame the Dims only, they are Both at fault, but the Dems are the most culpable for the current out of control earmark theft of US taxpayers money.

Hey Kim
Somewhere in your slam of a conservative is the passion that once ran our country. "We the people" doesn't mean Dem's or GOP, it means, "We the thinking, tax paying landlords of our nation". You align yourself with a party that supports something very dear to you. Be it abortion rights or school prayer, it doesn't matter. Until folks like you and I hold our elected officials accountable, we will all suffer at the hands of self-serving, "just get me elected again" politicians. Kim please join with the few who can get past themselves, bad policies of the past and politics to stop one of the greatest cancers our nation has ever known, "EARMARK SPENDING" Good luck with that!

Kimberly - 100% pure idiot
John Cambell was only elected to Congress in December 2005. So he has spent less time in a GOP controlled congress than he has under the Dems.

Try checking some facts before you spew your utter idiocy. Just once.

If John Campbell was elected in Dec 2005 then he never was in a GOP Congress. And i blame both political parties for the mess the US is in. And it is only going to get worse before it ever gets better if at all. As i am not interested in being like those idiots in Germany or France with even higher income tax rates. But the way things are going then we are going to have them and with that comes much slower econ growth. Any body that says deficits don,t matter is an idiot. So now that next year,s budget says to expect a almost 500 billion deficit then that is money being sucked out of the private sector and that is where econ growth comes from. Gov does not create prosperty but it can sure screw things up on allowing the private sector to create prosperty.

I don,t care for McCain but at this point i am voting for him unless his vp is pro-choice. And Obama will never get my vote in a million years.

Once again facts just escape you.

John Campbell was the original cosponsor of earmark reform legislation in September 2006 whilst under a GOP controlled congress.
Apparently doing the job you claim he wasn't.

Around the same time the house also passed The Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act in attempt to shed some light on who's requesting all the pork.

As for your bet about his rubberstamp....again facts prove you wrong. Mr Campbell actually turned down 63 of the 70 pork requests he received in his first couple of months in office and then e-mailed his constituents with details and explanations of the 7 he passed on for consideration. Accountability and transparency in action.

Facts....stubborn things, aren't they?

Waistful Spending
The earmarks have to end. Period.

There is a very insightful article about the earmark for farmers in I believe the June issue of Townhall Magazine. It really opens your eyes to exactly why this is all a complete waste of our money!

Just do it
If you want to get rid of earmarks, just do it. Sponsor a bill that makes it against the rules of the house and senate to amend legislation with anything that is not germane to the bill being discussed.

The bill is about road construction? Sorry congressman, you can't add your hospital project onto the bill because it has nothing to do with roads.

My pork is better than your pork
I find it interesting that most of those who point the finger at others "engaging in partisan politics" are themselves partisan.

The people that are truly responsible for pork is the American people who are looking for a handout. That includes individual and corporate. Politicians will never give up the power of the purse unless it is taken away from them by the American people.

Many who cry about wasteful spending and pork are typically talking about the other guy's earmarks which are bad, mine are good. If these politicians did not bring home the bacon you would not re-elect them.

I have a novel, modest suggestion. Why don't we enforce the 10th Amendment to the Constitution ?

Nice idea but then you get into the argument about the meaning of "germane"....you see, we are going to need the extra hospital after you build all those roads. More roads, means more people, more businesses more health care needs etc etc ad nauseum.

Those slimy congresscritters (present company excepted, Mr Campbell) could make any two projects germane to each other given enough waffle room.

Line item veto would be a good start. Total pork ban would be ideal.

Well, the spend thrift RINOs were kicked out in 2006 because the public grew tired of their spending. How have the Democrats done in the last two years with cutting the waste?

Kimmie is done with this thread now. Once she has been hit with too many facts refuting her claims she moves on to greener pastures. All part of her M.O. as a paid-for troll complements of moveon.org or whomever.

See you on the next thread Kimmie. Can't wait for this election to end just so you go away for a year.

Keep our eyes on the ball
I agree with OhioDave 100%;

"Just do it
If you want to get rid of earmarks, just do it. Sponsor a bill that makes it against the rules of the house and senate to amend legislation with anything that is not germane to the bill being discussed.

Unforunately Tibby is right;

"The people that are truly responsible for pork is the American people who are looking for a handout. That includes individual and corporate. Politicians will never give up the power of the purse unless it is taken away from them by the American people.

Many who cry about wasteful spending and pork are typically talking about the other guy's earmarks which are bad, mine are good. If these politicians did not bring home the bacon you would not re-elect them."

"We the people", need to start electing representatives and senators that aren't just empty suits.

What makes this post by Congressman Campbell so good is that it is non-partisan. Campbell isn't trying to point the finger at any party, but simply stating the facts. The current "House leadership is hoping that a Democratic President will be friendlier" to them for whatever it is they hope to pass. This is true for anything they hope to accomplish whether it is earmarks, legislation, or activist judges. If the House and Senate were controlled by Republicans then the Republicans would want a Republican President who was more friendly to them. Let's keep our eye on the ball of earmarks and pork spending and not be distracted by the old arguement of partisanship.
