I just posted on this subject; I am a former Marine who served from '89-'93. In my blog (Tim's Times), I reminisced about a scuffle with two Berkeley students on the very topic. It amazes me how so many liberal Americans don't even consider Marines (or other US troops for that matter) Americans at all. It's as though our Servicemen and women are somehow a foreign army. Those liberals apparently don't realize that the men and women in the Services are neighbors, friends, and family.
Stick it to those anti-American Berkeleyites! (Or should I say, "take their money away.")
Thank you again for your work! Semper Fidelis!

I went to Berkeley in the late fifties and the place was nuts even then! They should NEVER get any of my tax money!!! Good work!

Unbelievable that the Republic of Berkley City Council would advocate (or turn a blind eye to it) violence toward law abiding citizens! And especially toward those who have defended their right to free speech! Where is the uproar about this in the MSM?

This is a great move. Let's hope that our likely nominee in the Sen will sign on to similar legislation offered by Sen DeMint (I think). |

They may not want the Marines but let a Dirty Bomb go off there and they will be screaming for them Marines help,\.
But I agree take thee cities funding and then watch the people who dont care if the Marines are their they will rebell when the City has to raise taxes to cover what they loose. We know who gets taxed by the city. We The People |

I'm a former Marine (1969 to 1970, one tour in Vietnam) and I have found that most Americans who have not served in the armed forces are completely ignorant of the everyday sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. If they don't want the recruiters in the area, then they certainly don't want our servicemen and women to respond to any emergency that might befall their community. Remember, the National Guard is the military, too. Ignorance is bliss, may these people remain forever ignorant and never have to face enlightenment and tragedy. |

How can Berkeley pull this off? ISnt this some sort of blatant discrimination? how do they determine the Marines cant recruit, but every other leftist group can recruit, solicit, and engage the citizens of Berkeley?
outrageous. More people need to understand what's going on up there, and put pressure on the City so as to form an American outrage against them. |
|
It appears to me like these mutts in Berkeley need to be visited by The Freedom Riders. Maybe a little trim around the ears is what these clowns need. I applaud the Congressmans bill, but sometimes more drastic measures need to be taken. If one of those mutts interfered with me going into the recruiting station to thanks those Marines for their service ... cops or no cops - there would be trouble.
SEMPER FI, MARINES! Thank you for your service, and the same to all from any branch who serves or served in the past. |

Of those who have served in the finest fighting force ever fielded, I would ask Rep. Campbell to introduce legislation that appoints Code Pink the official defense force of the City of Berkeley. The 60's detritus running that scourge of Western civilization deserve no less.
In the mean time, cut off all federal funding. No doubt but that Berkeley could more than replace the lost revenue by laying a surcharge on works of sadomasochistic art.
And after the perverts and atheists of the commune destroy themselves through behaviors that leave no offspring, The USMC could build a base atop the ash. |

Call me a dissentor, but I hope there is still time for debate to air my ideas. I think the answer is more funding not less. I think you should strip the hippie earmarks and carbon agenda in favor of what they need in their community. DRUG ENFORCEMENT. I would like to see a West Coast DEA Operations Center built in Berkeley, CA. Other pet projects that I would like to dump in their lap: (1) an new oil refinery, (2) a giant nuclear reactor built on City Hall grounds using emminent domain to seize the property (hey, it would solve the brownout problem), (3) A nuclear waste dump the size of Yucca Mountain (it wouldn't harm any humans anyways). Also, like to see Haliburton locate there. I think the Semper Fi Act should transfer the money directly to the Marines in the Shattuck Recruiting Station and let them dole out the money the way the see fit. Maybe ad buys and 10,000 USMC Eagle Globe and Anchor lunch boxes (winning hearts and minds). Just my 2 cents on 2 million dollars. Semper Fidelis Marines. Jon, MBA and US Army Veteran |

We should not have to subsidize this idiotic bersek-ly behavior.
The integrity of Marine Corps still shines even in this, because they just take it in stride.
What kills me is this: Marines would willingly fight to the death to defend the freedom of even these Berkley jerks to act like that.
God bless US Marines |

My twenty years in the Marine Corps gave me many opportunities to observe that some people are very slow learners; a very small minority will never learn. City Council members are no exception, as a couple of them in Hue City found. They too didn't want Marines in town, until Tet. You're in a University town. Look it up.
Cheers to you Congressman for your effort. If there is anything that will "teach" Berkeley Council members about the real world, it will be having their "federal" funds shut off: money that Marines, and all other service members make possible. |

To the Marines who are leaving comments here, I wanted to say thanks.
I'm sitting here spouting my opinion, un-afraid, in the greatest nation this planet's ever known. I have more freedom and liberty than I know what to do with. I've never known anything else. More than any politician, activist, or academic, I thank you Marines for this.
I think most rational Americans feel the same debt of gratitude. God bless you and your proud organization. |

...that they have the right to protest because of the men and women that have served and fought in the armed forces to win and maintain those rights. Is berkley even a US city anymore? I thought it was located in Califoxico. Another thought - why do we even bother trying to recruit these nutjobs anyway. Take their funding away for people that still believe in a free America and not a one-sided censorship country. |

as much as the actions being taken by the US military over the last 60 years.
The military has evolved from a defensive force to any army supporting an ever-reaching empire, and it is likely that Berkelites don't support wars of agression.
However, it IS interesting too see how many voices on here are clamoring to snuff out voices of dissent-- one of the very things Marines have died for, DEFENDING our country and its ideals. Freedom of speech means freedom to say something that may be unpopular with the masses. |

I am sure the US Marine Corp's recruiting mission in Berkeley, CA is protected by the bill of rights and the Marine Recruiters should have equal free speech protections to carry out their mission. Don't blame the Marines if they have a better bullhorn than the Code Pinkos. How about some more recruiting tools like high powered loudspeaker systems (Have the USMC talk to the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, NC). It seemed to work well on General Noriega when he was holed up in Panama. I vote for country music punctuated by recruiting messages. Semper Fi. Jon, US Army Veteran |

I think there is a typo in your title- it should be Politicalassinity. I grow weary of reading from readers like you- either conspiracy nuts or "it’s all our fault" types. The simple fact of the matter is these "academic" types can talk the talk but not walk the walk. If the city counsel feels a need to be this "anti-military", then they should have the backbone to do it even though it cost them. But we both know that will never happen.
Sometime try and take your blinders off and look at the free speech codes at the universities and then decide who is trying to "control speech". Go back to sucking on the taxpayer teat, like the good liberal you are. A quote you may not understand but is relevent: "People sleep peacably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." -George Orwell

I think the NRA should celebrate their next convention in Berkeley, CA. Maybe it is too small to have a good convention hotel, but Oakland or San Francisco hosting with a field trip to Berkeley would be just fine by me. Berkeley is the town that would do the most to strip our rights as Americans. I say don't be afraid to exercise your rights anywhere in this country and for God's sake don't cut and run in Berkeley, CA. I say give Berkeley a dose of reality. I think it is wise to follow the lead of the US Marines and invade Berkeley, CA with freedom loving gun owners. Semper Fi. Jon, MBA, US Army Veteran |

Thank you Sir, and thank you to the Marines. |

Hi Mr. Campbell,
Congratulations on restraining the Democrats in Congress from going on a tax and spend shopping spree with the economic stimulus plan. I hope you don't take these comments the wrong way, but I like to speek freely and give you a piece of my mind. Therefore, I think a reminder is in order. Before the majority (the Dems) gets to giddy about their success, I would urge you to reign in Comrade Nancy and her communist colleagues and remind them that this is not the time to sing Kumbaya just yet. There is still some schoolwork to be done before it is time for recess. You might not want to let go of their hands and you should probably continue twisting their hands instead of holding their hands until they show some real support for our troops by signing the Semper Fi Act of 2008. Remind them for me that it wouldn't look good for them to be seen siding with the the Code Pinkos and the City Council of Berkeley in their losing battle to destroy our nation's US Marine Corp. I know there is a temptation to let the Democrats kill this bill and hang them out to dry in November when we out them as not supporting a popular stand against Berkeley and not supporting the Semper Fi Act of 2008. I am not up on all the scriptures but I think even Jesus was tempted so I can't blame you for being tempted. I would suggest resisting this kind of temptation and pushing this bill down the Democrat Caucuses throats. God Bless and God Speed in slitting the wasteful funds from the Berkeley Budget. Semper Fi.
