Was he out all weekend on a bender? Spending the Stim money he first refused, then accepted with hat in hand? One thing is for sure, he wasn't running the state like he should've been. Maybe he and Ensign had a par-tay! |

GM and its historic role in the American Century are not beyond salvage.
Obama cannot destroy what he cannot control. As soon as he and his party are repudiated, the General Motors Corp. can be re-sold to the public. Assuming that the fulminators do not squander what is left there, as they curry favor with the draino eating UAW.
To see Pontiac vaporized is beyond belief. When one thinks of GM in the 20th Century, one thinks of their business model that had the entry market for the new buyer at Chevrolet and then that buyer’s ascension, gravitation to the other product brands, Pontiac, Olds, Buick, Cadillac as that buyer improved their own position in life over time. Such a fine dream factory.
Many of the cars were without appeal after the glory of the 1960's. Those errors were addressable and there were bright lights even in those periods, (the SS Malibu’s, the Birds and Cameros, the 1977 Cadillac Seville, the Vette's,) that reminded potential buyers that coming back to buy American was worthwhile.
Now, we have a President and Administration that understand manufacturing and celebrate the American Auto and the glory of those traditions as little as they celebrate our glorious military dead.
Ask any member of the Obama Auto Task force to discuss the importance of the short block V8 and you'll see the deer in the headlights before you turn the headlights on.
Now, after this comment, they may leap to learn about V8's but there are a myriad of questions they should be publically asked to bring them out and show how superficial and even dare we say it, non-existent, is their foundational knowledge of auto manufacturing and engineering.
2010 harkens and 2012 beckons.

coming from the lefties here?
They're grasping at stories like Sanford's whereabouts, hoping for some drama, when it's likely a NON-STORY.
I thought they would have SO MUCH to say about Obama'a accomplishments! His wonderful economy! Closing Gitmo! Bringing home all the troops! Flowers and parades!
Nope. Nope, nope, nope.
Obama is tanking. Spends too much, on TV too much, lies all the time, and Gibbsy is retarded. Can't close GItmo, OOPS! Darn, Obama acted, and THEN thought about it. DUH! Not so smart, is he? Spent too much on TARP and bailouts, now even stupid Dems are nervous about all the money Obamacare will cost, and it won't even cover most people who NEED handout-healthcare! D'oh! OH no! Now North Koreans are getting all crazy and threatening us with NUCLEAR WEAPONS! Iran is in chaos! The Taliban wants Pakistan's nukes to strike us with! Our once-reliable allies now question our loyalty, and our enemies laugh in our faces. All because Obama is an IDIOT. A self-centered, arrogant, stubborn, naive idiot.

Obama has missed the biggest opportunity he will ever have.
Instead of changing GM, he just downsized, making a smaller, sick company, costing hundreds of thousands of jobs. It's the same old "solution" from people who don't know what the problems really are.
The American Manufacturing industry could blow the competition away with the "right" changes. It is possible to be vastly more productive than we are, and that we must be to compete in a world marketplace. We can make better cars, cheaper than any competitor. But, we need to use the talents and creativity of the American worker. The current system inhibits that.
Our manufacturers need to rethink the old system at the factory floor level. It's not a matter of better models. It's a matter of productivity.

Almost every auto and truck I've ever owned has been owner-servicable, save a blown rod or transmission.
I'd like to see one of the spin-offs build a very inexpensive auto and truck (less than $8K) with absolutely no frills. One that is for the most part put together with clevis pins. Everything would be easily removed and replaced by the owner.
One model, one color, AM/FM radio, one speaker, heater but no AC, standard transmission....
Cash for clunkers? How much money and energy is saved by keeping a servicable auto on the road vs. mfg a new one?
|
|
|
spot on , i prefer a pick up with vinyl seats and floors crank up windows and no frills . you cant buy one at a dealership and it's all but impossible to order one .out where i live they need to offer one in 4 wheel drive manual hubs . preferably a straight six for an engine . |
|
Ditto the 4WD here in CO.
Funny you should mention vinyl seats and a straight six. The '68 Ford of which I learned to drive is still running and on the road. It also has a plain white plastic dash (one piece), a cardboard headliner, and a "three on the tree" transmission. |
|
|
I live in northern nm ,4 wheel drive is a must. the straight 6 is bombproof and easy to maintain more than enough power and good mileage . fuel injection would help meet the epa standards .it's only problem is that its not sexy . but for us bluecollar guys sexy is not a big deal. |
|
|
It's gonna be "Government Motors" for quite a long time. That vaunted Chevy superiority? Gone now. Hang on to your Silverados, buds, 'cause the new ones will be Yugos. |
|
Yeah, I don't need "sexy" either. I need durable, servicable, and cheap. It would sell.
And as it would have no frills, this would allow for after-market mfgrs to design and build upgrades and accessories. Upgrades and accessories would NOT be the responsibility of the mfgr of the truck/auto. There'd be no need for an R & D department after the vehicles are designed.
Unfortunately, the damned things would have to be built in Mexico. States can make themselves attractive in comparison to other states, but none can escape the FEDERAL bureaucracy. |

"The Obama-Pelosi cabal would like us to get out of cars as part of their quest to make us conform to the behaviors that they believe we should have."
Always funny to hear people say this as if they actually believe it.
"make us conform to the behaviors they believe we should have" - what exactly does that mean? What have you been made to conform to? Couldn't we say that YOUR side want to make people conform to the behaviors YOU believe we should have? |

Thank GOD F0R GREAT AMERICANS LIKE MR. PENSKE. I WILL BUY A SATURN FOR MY NEXT CAR PURCHASE. HE IS WHAT THIS COUNTRY HAS BEEN ABOUT IN THE PAST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE FOR THIS COUNTRY. |
|
Unfortunately, you are correct.
After 6 months of post-innaugural campaigning, this president has done nothing exceptional to wax-on about. His charm has kept the vacuous love affair alive with the press, but certainly without substance. It is all wearing thin, but, your comment is worth another look.
There are no substantive affirmations coming from the Left on this man. There is, however, persistent harping about conservatives and how despised they are, what they represent. The only transparency working is how Obama's actions do not represent what he says. And his loyal supporters are loathe to acknowledge this.
Regarding your statement about Gibbs: Let us hope the press secretary is not replaced. He provides nearly as much idiocy as does the vice president as backdrop for their "charming" boss.

"Ever notice no Obama praise coming from the lefties here?"
Huh? Now I'm confused. I thought "lefties" were all brainwashed followers of "the Messiah," who believed everything he said and supported every idea he had. Has somebody broken the spell? |
|
Hillarity - Mr Sanford did not accept the money hat in hand. He was forced to accept it by the courts. Get your facts straight. Also, this is the wrong article for that comment. We are discussing GM, here. Please stay on topic. Vonryansexpress, I am afraid you are wrong. As long as the UAW controls GM (in combination with the Federal Government/Obama), GM is sunk. UAW will suck out every penny, before it is even earned. THere is no way it can survive now (thanks to Mr. Pres.) |

I believe you are right. I doubt that the unions will suddenly worry about the product being profitable. They have spend years developing a mindset that business is evil and they are not getting what is due them. Does anyone think this mindset will change. They are also counting on the big government checkbook to keep them doing business as usual. Obama is beholden to the Union and they are well aware of this. It will be very interesting to watch this play out. I would be willing to bet that the government slush fund will be supporing GM for a very long time before they finally admit ts must fail. |
|
Obama is going to have a consistent thread of actions with a myriad of reasons for doing it. Mostly it will come down to "stimulus" because that sells, and people are slow to realize that Obama's definition of stimulus is the opposite of President Bush's definition. This whole rubbish with the UAW show's his devotion to the "common man," or the equalized man, or the socialized man. UAW and Obama are one in the same. The only difference is one has a philosophical motive and the other practical (albeit unscrupulous.) That's why you won't see salary regulation for UAW, ACLU, ACORN, etc. How can you be receiving an "evil" salary if you don't generate money in the first place? Very exciting news with Saturn, BTW. Saturns have some outstanding design innovations. I'm sure they'll make huge strides in efficiency. |

Back when the Indy-car wars were raging and Roger Penske was in the process of selling the tracks he owned, a racing insider was asked if Roger would be all right. The quick answer was, "when the music stops Roger always has a seat. Roger and Saturn will be alright. |
