I listened to many of the speeches given by supporters of the bill yesterday. I also had the opportunity to question the Director of the Congressional Budget Office on the subject. The tepid arguments and weak rebuttals of the proponents here lead me to believe that perhaps even they know that this is not really about stimulus. Being generous, I can say that maybe 25% of the items in this bill have some multiplier effect. But the rest is just spending. Just 2 months ago, President Obama’s Chief of Staff, Rahm Emmanuel, said “Never let a serious crisis go to waste. What I mean by that is it's an opportunity to do things you couldn't do before."

Couple that statement with the President’s repeated comments yesterday that this is just “the first” in a series of economic recovery actions, and it becomes clearer to me that this bill is really about getting about a 20% annual increase in non-entitlement federal spending right now, and paying for it with tax increases to be named later. The public would not stand for that in the normal course of politics.

If you don’t believe that, I hereby submit for your consideration a document that was sent to me by a Democratic Congresswoman from California in order to entice me to vote for the package because of the money that California would receive. It actually pushed me even further in the opposite direction. I think it will have the same affect on you so here is link. Virtually all the spending in here is merely the federal government paying for programs that the state is already doing. In another case,  billions of dollars are allocated for more school construction, at a time when we have just borrowed and spent $30 billion on school construction in California, and where some of our failing schools happen to be housed in beautiful new buildings.  The State of California will get a $32 billion spending increase in this bill, paid for by federal taxpayers. I hope that the idea of raising taxes in California will be dead now. Isn’t $32 billion more spending enough for now?

Holy Cr*p!
Did I read that right? $11 BILLION for Medicaid?

wow.

Stimulus to nowhere
is a better name for this bill. We will be borrowing every penny of this explosion of spending. As for job creation, it does nothing to create anything except guarantee for politicans to stay in power.

I hope the Repubs. will stand and fight this loony President and his band of criminals.

To "The Plumber":
Yes Sir. Reportedly, this $11+ Billion for Medicaid includes free health care for millions of illegal aliens. Google: "Medicaid vs. Illegal Aliens" and you will get ill.

BHO constantly refers to the "American People this", and, the "American People that". What a baseless farce. His cunningly and deceitful reassurances as to his rescue endeavors regarding the American economy, in actuality, are totally misleading. We are apparently supporting the world.

Yikes, I couldn't believe my eyes for a minute there either, especially knowing the rampant fraud that takes place under California's "MediCal" program.

Rounding up kids and homeless people on the streets to take them to bogus doctors/chiropractors office for "services".

IMO, California and her crazy citizens should be forced to manage their fiscal irresponsibility on their own, with no Federal help whatsoever. They got themselves into this mess, they should get themselves out.

That is what happens when you have democratic strongholds in cities and states.

Is this what we're to expect for the next four years? God Bless you, Congressman, for your stance. Do not, do not, do not give up the fight. It's gloomy now, but as long as there are Americans like you in Washington, we'll get through this. I wrote my own Congressman (Mike Rogers) and thanked him for voting "no." Maybe I need to do that more often so he doesn't feel abandoned!

We're behind you.

Every year
Every year of the Iraq war, to the tune of $800 Billion dollars, Bush requested $100-200 Billion with no plan to pay for it except when Democrats came into office and having them raise taxes.

Did you ever criticize Bush's war budget for having no plan to pay for it except raising taxes?

If not, why not?

Seems to me your criticisms are duplicitous at best, but generally just typical scurrilous political banter. Hold you enemy to a standard YOU can't be bothered with.

re: Kathy
As a resident of California I agree. However, California only gets back 68 cents for every dollar it sends to DC.

So, let California pay for its own way as long it gets back 1 dollar from the feds for every dollar it gives them.

Fact is that the so called Red states rely on hand outs from the so called Blue states and have for decades.

Howabout not "giving" the Feds anything? Cut out the middleman's cut. So long as there is a middleman, no state will get back what they give. Red or Blue.

Howabout a little bi-partisanship and tolerance? You go to a Blue state and keep your money, I'll go to a Red state and keep mine, and then neither of our opinions will affect the other in any way.

Your own reasoning is a bit faulty vis-a-vis the Iraq War, which was a necessary step in the war on terror...and which is (or should be) a priority of the federal government. If the Clinton administration had bothered to do its job in this sphere instead of suborning perjury, then the money for the war might not have been necessary...not that facts really matter to your side all that much.

re: David
Sorry David.

As a Libertarian there is only one way to view Iraq: nation building. The war was over when we toppled Saddam.

Libertarians do not believe in Nation Building. William F. Buckley Jr. didn't, Ron Paul doesn't and I don't.

Iraq is the Republican failed attempt to do what the Democrats did for Germany and Japan after WWII and for exactly the same reasons.

re: Plumber
As a libertarian I believe in repealing the income tax amendment and dissolving the Fed.

However, I find it very convienant for people to use California, where I live, as a punching bag when in fact the food on their table is in part subsidized by California.

California gives more to the Union than it receives. People who bash CA are ungrateful sods.

JFYI
California has a balanced budget amendment. The current fiscal crisis is due in large part to not being able to borrow its way out of the current debacle. They must balance the budget. The State Assembly cannot spend in deficit.

If only the Federal government had a balanced budget amendment.

Does your conservative state require the state legislature to balance its budget?

California is going to come out of this crisis better than the Federal government for one reason: no deficit spending.

The balanced budget amendment is going to force California to cut spending. That's right, the Demcrats can't raise taxes without a 2/3 majority. Ha. If only a 2/3 vote was needed in DC for a tax increase.

I didn't and don't see the Republicans in DC proposing a balanced budget admendment.

You people really have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to California.

California is going to weather this financial debacle better than any other state for three reasons:
1.) Balanced Budget
2.) A 2/3 vote required for a tax increase.
3.) Prop. 13 means that property taxes haven't increased on long-time home owners.

latest item in "stimulus" package - $275B for Hollywood. Didn't get details but suggest we listen very carefully to this one. Never forget Arnold is a member of the Kennedy family. Not good.

Dear Congressman Campbell
This stimulus package seems to be more about paying back all the groups that helped Obama get elected; he owes ACORN and the rest of them big time for their invaluable assistance.

We love America just the way she is and aren't willing to lower our standard of living in order to be equally miserable.

America is about equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. Please do what you can to bring this bill go a grinding halt.
TheHistorian writes: Saturday, January, 31, 2009 5:36 PM
Congratulations Campbell
You, all the rest of the Republicans, and about a dozen Democrats all hung tough. I salute you all. Let Obama try to blame Republicans for this, because it won't work now.

Please hang tough, all of you. Keep up the good work against what seems to be overwhelming odds. The admiration and prayers of those of us in middle American are with you.

Vampire Reflection has bad data
Where did you get your data? Please cite statistics. The last data I can find, 2005, says you get back $0.80. http://www.nemw.org/taxburd.htm

If you don't like sending your tax dollars to others, go ahead and cut taxes. All you are trying to do right now is make the Federal government pay your bill for your own foolishness as a state.

You owe red states a heck of a lot. Remember where your electricity is generated next time when the red states cut you off because you put another stupid scheme for freezing prices into place. Without the red states you decry as a market and a place to do your dirty work, you would collapse.
