Well, apparently poor people do pay taxes, at least the ones who smoke do. You should be happy; now the stimulus bill tax cuts and the further ones yet to come will no longer be welfare, they'll just go to pay the extra cigarette taxes. It's win-win. |

What's next is the question we are having to ask every day. The CBO numbers before the election already crunched his numbers and it came out 209,000. Biden comes out today and says the middle class are going to have to bear a part of the burden. No specifics on what the middle class cutoff line is. Three months into his election and this revelation strikes them out of the blue! He promised everyone the stars,sky and moon all the while cutting the deficit in half. Come on, you know darn well that the reference is to INCOME tax and not all taxes. 97% of tax paid by top 50% of earners etc.
It will be interesting to see if that 97% goes up this year bearing in mind all that extra revenue BO has been flushing out of his cabinet appointees.
Tobacco taxes are optional however and everybody has an equal right to choose not to pay them. |

Any gov't who uses an addictive drug to raise tax revenues is no better than a street corner pusher. Tobacco is a healthcare issue not a revenue source. Taxing it and limiting where it can be used only serves to confuse and enrage people. Treat it for what it is, one of the most addictive substances people can find anywhere and that kills 1,400 Americans each and every day.
65% of new tobacco users are under 17 years old. How can that be? Big tobacco spends $billions$ studying how to make that happen and taking every advantage of doing so. Todays big advertising location are quick shop stores where teens shop for their snacks. Next time you're in one look at the tobacco ads plastered all over the place.

I doubt the people who pay the tobacco tax will see it that way though. At the end of the day your, mine or Mr Campbell's spin on the assorted meanings of the word "taxes" in different contexts will matter not one bit compared to the more simplified version that most of the 20%+ of US adults that do smoke will perceive.
Tax away as far as I am concerned. I couldn't care less. Throw the extra revenue at the health care system. I'd be happy to see it taxed out of existence although we both know that is highly improbable. That route brings up just as many problems as it solves.

Also if the idea of raising the taxes to almost $3 a pack in some places is to get people to stop. Where is the revenue going to come from to pay for these programs like SCHIP. |

Okay, so I shouldn't smoke. So what? I thought that free societies allowed individualism. It is not for my government to determine all of my actions. This tax is so enormous that it seeks to direct thought.
Minority Rights
Smokers are a minority these days and that's great! It's supposed to be okay to be a minority in America because minority rights are protected. Not so for smokers. Careful, our government's gun is cocked and you may be cited next.

Did Obama ever define that he would not raise Income Tax, I only heard him say he wouldn't raise Taxes period. Problem is he said so many different things trying to pin him down to what he said compared to what he meant is difficult. Every day I watch the stock market fall, my 401 dwindle, the govt. spend more than I can ever imagine, my company furlough more employees, Gas go up, Michelle wear (3) new outfits, and Americans becoming bitter towards each other. At least the change he promised is coming true, I don't think he ever said that it would be GOOD change. |

Charles and Douglas have raised a point that should be discussed. If vices are all bad, why does government in every State print scratch tickets that the "needy" by in bulk every time I get behind one at the checkout counter? Why does government pick which vices are legal and taxed to death or made illegal and come with heavy fines and ruined lives. The common denominator is money for government. If tobacco is as bad as they claim then why don't they make it illegal? Same with alcohol. Either make it illegal or stay the hell out of peoples lives that use or abuse legal substances. Gambling has ruined more lives than cigarettes and alcohol combined. The tax revenue is staggering. Did everyone know a casino's profit margin can not exceed three percent of gross earnings. The millions of us that have ventured into these dens of doom realize 97% of the take from these palaces is awesome. |
