With an earned doctorate, I have build a career over the past twenty years improving the financial condition of business spanning many industries. I have grown companies and I have downsized companies. I understand how economic growth is stimulated. And, dealt with the effects of decline.
There is nothing in this bill that any reasonable person would expect to lead to sustainable creation of long term job growth... Or, for that matter, even reduce job loss. If it is not structured to do those, it is not economic stimulus. |
|
This is a good and concise article. Thank you Rep. Campbell.
My own view on 'stimulation' is that federal monies be directed at the manufacturing sectors of our economy. Even at the risk of creating inventory where there may be little demand at this time, investment in production as opposed to service, renovation and education will stablize the labor market. The unemployed do not qualify for loans that do not get made in regions that do not see an increase in home sales, so to speak.
We should be Keynesian in the sense that Richard Nixon declared, "now I am a Keynesian" in his effort to use deficit spending to reduce unemployment ... i.e. a macroeconomic view without the need for wage and price controls that attended the Nixon urge to control inflation.
Let's direct stimulus money to production. |

"obstructionist asshats" ..where is a bar of soap when you need one...
It must actually be stimulative..isn't that the point..who in their right mind would disagree with that?
Any spending must have substantial multiplier benefits...meaning, it must be more than a "one shot deal"..who would be against that?..unless there were another agenda?
It must be done quickly and decisively...of course..that makes perfect sense, and the example of education is a perfect dichotomy between what the conservatives believe the "stimulus" should be, and what the liberals think it should be..buy more liberal votes because it makes people feel good, but doesn't address the problem..
"stupid ideas"..I think thats what was meant..not offering "stupid ideas" regarding the stimulus..that can be reserved for our "enlightened" liberal friends...this will be a fiasco..the liberal voting base will see this for what it is..stupid, and that will be placed squarely on the DEMs shoulders..change is great..if someone else has to do it..the Bush hatred will subside (well maybe not for some), and all eyes will be on the pseudo-wunderkind, President Obama..and he will goon it up..and the libs will pay dearly..unfortunately, but true. |

It's nice to see that someone in Congress still knows Keynes, however when reviewing 'The Road to Serfdom', Keynes said that not only is he "in a deeply moved agreement" with the book, but "...what we want is not no planning, or even less planning, indeed I should say we almost certainly want more."
Keynes, btw, was a pillow-biter. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It just seems that gay folks lack self-confidence and therefore gain strength and self-esteem through government coercion. |

Democrats describe this bill as a transportation and infrastructure investment bill.
Only $30 billion, a paltry 3 percent of the total cost, is ear marked for highway and related projects.
The Corps of Engineers gets $4.5 billion for their flood control projects.
Where does the money go?
It gets funneled to 32 new programs totaling $137 billion or 38 percent of all discretionary spending in the bill. Seventeen of these new programs have never been considered by Congress and account for $123 billion or 34 percent of all discretionary spending in the bill.
$252 billion is for income-transfer payments, cash or benefits to individuals for doing nothing at all.
$54 billion will go to federal programs that the OMB and the GAO have already said are not effective or fail to pass financial audit.
That is just for starters.
The bill is a spending bill designed to pay back political supporters and ensure that the Democratic party remains in power. Don't believe that?
"We won the election. We wrote the bill." ~Nancy Pelosi.
"Never let a serious crisis go to waste. What I mean by that is it's an opportunity to do things you couldn't do before." ~ Rahm Emanuel
Remember that once these spending levels are achieved, they likely will not be reduced.

This nation is about to be hijacked by a so-called stimulus package that reeks!
Call it what it is: rotten pork or earmarks and political payback, all those things that Obama the candidate said he was against.
Who or what can stop this bill from reaching the Whitehouse. I understand it passed the House today.
What if we turn on the heat on our state Senators and tell them to get spines and either completely clean up this bill so it stimulates our economy- or kill it.
Will flooding our local newspapers with letters of protest to the editors start a groundswell in time to get the attention of the Democratic Senators? It's worth a try. Speak up as Patrick Henry did. Be dramatic, be persistent, be bold.
This is no time to passive or to argue among ourselves. The consequences of ignoring what happened in the House today are going to trap us and our children's children for decades to come.
If and when the terrorists test Obama's mettle as Commander in Chief, will there be financial resources to meet that test if the nation's debt load is strangling our national reserves and our moral will?
Stop this spending express with our expressed outrage - everywhere.
To quote Forrest Gump: Stupid is as stupid does. Mr President, this stimulus package you're lobbying for is just plain stupid....

Rep Barney Frank has proposed his own "stimulus". It failed miserably after it was revealed 'ol Barney's plan involved a "butt plug".

What is beautiful irony is the Republicans were the ones that gathered bi-partisan support voting AGAINST the bill! The very antithesis of what Obama was propagandizing for.
Oh, sweet irony. We still lost - can't fight numbers. But looks like the Republicans showed Pelosi/Obama that they are the partisans!

"This is no time to passive or to argue among ourselves. The consequences of ignoring what happened in the House today are going to trap us and our children's children for decades to come."
We cannot stop it. Don't waste your breath other than telling any GOP representation to just vote "no". That's the only thing that can help that party now.
The history of socialism and slavery has been written a hundred times over. It's time to let this thing unfold the way it has so many times before. Social Security will collapse in a few years as well. Ditto Medicare and Medicade.
Prepare youself. Read up on the collapse of the Soviet Union and its aftermath. Or maybe even more appropriate, the collapse of the Deutsches Reich (aka: Weimar Republic). |

Recessions indicate the need to redirect resources, both capital and human. Washington statistics are so massive that they mask anything nascent and interesting. In reality, it will be the millions of unemployed who sniff out unmet needs and find new opportunities. Venture capital will fund some, and they will hire the rest. Many workers will need different skills and will use this hiatus to get more education. A stimulus that focuses on developing p;eople would help the most. We need to provide support, but that is not all. I find the alternate energy field very interesting, but I wish the government would delay investing until research yields better solutions. Wind and solar don't look like good bets to me. |

White Salamander has made a good point, but missed the mark.
Comparing the thievery on wall street (and our Government by the whole mortgage crisis fiasco) that damaged/destroyed our retirement funds to the stimulus package - somehow appears to equate them as offsetting.
I.e., IF the stimulus package were being used to replenish our stock market/401K losses then, who wouldn't vote for it. It'd simply be a 'do-over,' with significantly higher profile oversight.
But it's NOT. It's mortgaging our children's future (Michelle Malkin calls it "The Generational Theft Act of 2009" for something that is NOT going to have any immediate short term effect! By the time any of this money reaches the street, the recession will have corrected itself, just like it did with little government intervention in the late70's/early 80's. Well, other than Regan's TAX CUTS!!! |

SOH just demonstrated the liberal argument: You are an obstructionist asshat. There you go. No facts, no counterargument, just namecalling. Wow, am I impressed. Say, SOH, why should we the taxpayers give ACORN 3 1/2 billion dollars for election fraud? How does that stimulate the economy? |

I think that it has become so apparent that no stimulus is involved that they now call it a recovery package. It is becoming even more apparent that Obama, Reid, and Pelosi have no clue as to what will stimulate the economy. |

Poor Scarlet. She can't find a single Republican that understands or feels her pain. Nobody has listened to her since our last First Black President. You people deserve one another. You whine for no reason and they collect taxes and throw money at non-existent problems. It's like a movie of a parallel universe. It would be funny if it weren't so serious. When money runs short in my house, I list my priorities. I find ways to cut expenses. And I stop whining and tighten the belt until I get caught up. Obama is not more honest than any other politician, and most conservatives would believe he lies with impunity. He's not smarter, better looking, etc., etc. He may even mean well, but as educated as he might be, he lacks wisdom. Wisdom comes from experience, losing a battle or two, and turning to wiser, older mentors. That would not include C. Rangel, C. Dodd, B. Fwank, N. Pelosi, Lisp-Wristed Reid. Good Lord your leaders are pathetic. Barack, you gotta find better people to hang with! RUSH!! RUSH!! RUSH!! |

Let's start taking names and actively campaign against those stupid enough to actually vote in favor of destroying America. In charge of this country is the last place they ought to be.

You have to hand it to the democrats in Congress. In the body of a single bill, the alleged stimulus, they have managed to combine the worst attributes of spoils politics and fiscal incontinence. To complete the hat trick, they have included trade restrictions that promise to rival Smoot-Hawley in parochial destructiveness. One could argue that outright trade bans envisioned here are more damaging to the economy than high tariffs imposed by Smoot-Hawley.
Casual examination of this monstrosity is disappointing; careful scrutiny invites outrage. Undoubtedly there will be some apologists for this nonsense who will hold forth. Just as surely, the truth will not be in them. If wisdom prevails in the Senate, unlikely at best, this patchwork legislative atrocity will be consigned to the ash heap and the process will be restarted with a clean sheet of paper. The handiwork of the House is fatally flawed and tweaking around the margins will only serve to make the bill incrementally less disastrous - a waste of both time and political capital.

Hastings, D-Fla., has introduced to the House of Representatives a new bill calling for the secretary of homeland security to establish no fewer than six national emergency centers for corralling civilians on military installations.
